JAFFLZ® Opens in Park City

Jafflz®, a fast-casual, gourmet food concept based on the classic South African toasted “jaffle” pocket sandwich, announced the soft opening of its brand new headquarters and café in Park City, Utah, with an official grand opening set for February 26, 2015. Adding an extension to Du Monde Gourmet commissary kitchen on North Silver Creek Road, Park City residents can now enjoy South African native Chef Meryl van der Merwe’s global twist on an old-fashioned favorite, right off the heels of its successful debut at the Sundance Film Festival. Jafflz hopes to take Park City, nation by storm

For Meryl van der Merwe, biting into a jaffle elicits nostalgia. Stuffed with leftovers or fillings such as canned spaghetti, the toasted pocket sandwiches are traditional fare in her native South Africa.

Now, van der Merwe, a local chef, is bringing a bit of her homeland to America — albeit in an elevated form. She recently opened the first location of Jafflz, at 7182 North Silver Creek Road, a restaurant that serves the sandwiches stuffed with gourmet foods such as gumbo or curry.

Backed by Kevin Plank, the founder and CEO of Under Armour, van der Merwe hopes to eventually transform the restaurant into a national and global chain. But at its core, Jafflz is an uncomplicated concept.

Jafflz™, a fast-casual, gourmet food concept based on the classic South African toasted “jaffle” pocket sandwich, announced the soft opening of its brand new headquarters and café in Park City, Utah, with an official grand opening set for February 26, 2015.   Adding an extension to Du Monde Gourmet commissary kitchen on North Silver Creek Road, Park City residents can now enjoy South African native Chef Meryl van der Merwe’s global twist on an old-fashioned favorite, right off the heels of its successful debut at the Sundance Film Festival.  With all of Chef Meryl’s jaffles being made from scratch daily using only the finest ingredients, Park City is in for a unique and delicious treat.

The entry of Jafflz™ into the market is ideally timed to serve the rapidly expanding demand for new and nutritious convenient gourmet and grab-and-go alternatives.  A jaffle is a toasted pocket sandwich filled with sweet or savory filling, made in a jaffle iron (a type of closed metal skillet) and placed over heat.  The resulting sandwich is a sealed pocket with a deliciously melted and cooked center.  Having grown up in South Africa and enjoying jaffles on camping trips as a child, Chef Meryl longed to revive this South African favorite by adding her own twist of globally inspired ingredients she discovered while cooking around the world as a private chef.

It was the introduction of a jaffle to Kevin Plank, founder and CEO of Under Armour, and his family that launched Chef Meryl’s Jafflz™ venture.  Having served as a private chef to the Planks for many years, Chef Meryl formed a long-time relationship with the family, who helped to make Jafflz™ an extension of her Du Monde Gourmet private chef business. “It all starts right here in my own back yard of Park City, Utah,” adds Chef Meryl.  “Jafflz™ will soon be in numerous locations around the country and then the world.”

Taking pride in tradition and quality, the Jafflz™ headquarters and café embodies a nostalgic Cape Dutch feel, harkening back to the early days of the Western Cape, but with industrial and modern twists.  Guests can place their order and watch their jaffles being made by hand through the large chef’s kitchen or quickly grab-and-go from a pre-made selection.  The facility also includes two commercial production kitchens and an associated wholesale packaging area, telephone sales space, office space and conference facilities.  The location will also serve as the base for a national expansion of the Jafflz™ concept.  More details will be announced soon.

All Jafflz™ are served with a choice of white, wheat or gluten free bread, and are made fresh from scratch on premises using only the finest ingredients. The menu features many jaffles, including favorites such as the Classic Fast-Breaker Jaffle™ made with Scrambled Egg, Bacon and Cheddar Cheese($7); the Shorty Jaffle™ made with Beef Short Ribs, Caramelized Onions and Cheddar Cheese  ($7); the Babootie Jaffle™ stuffed with South African Lamb Curry  ($7); as well as a selection of Vegetarian Jaffles™  including Vegetarian Curry ($7).  Sweet Cravings include the Choco Mono Jaffle™ made with Nutella & fresh Banana ($5); the PB&J Jaffle™ ($5); and the best-selling Sky High Apple Pie Jaffle™ ($5).

Jafflz™ is located adjacent to Du Monde Gourmet’s commissary kitchen at 7180 North Silver Creek Road (at the junction of Interstate 80 and US HWY 40) and is open from 9:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m., seven days a week.
