"Have you ever heard of a jaffle?
It's a South African Grilled Sandwich Pocket that can be filled with ingredients sweet or savory.
You don't have to travel across continents to enjoy this yummy treat - you just have to head to Park City! Jafflz® is a fast-casual gourmet eatery based on the South African classic."
For Meryl van der Merwe, biting into a jaffle elicits nostalgia. Stuffed with leftovers or fillings such as canned spaghetti, the toasted pocket sandwiches are traditional fare in her native South Africa.
Now, van der Merwe, a local chef, is bringing a bit of her homeland to America -- albeit in an elevated form. She recently opened the first location of Jafflz, at 7182 North Silver Creek Road, a restaurant that serves the sandwiches stuffed with gourmet foods such as gumbo or curry.
Backed by Kevin Plank, the founder and CEO of Under Armour, van der Merwe hopes to eventually transform the restaurant into a national and global chain. But at its core, Jafflz is an uncomplicated concept.
Jafflz®, a fast-casual, gourmet food concept based on the classic South African toasted “jaffle” pocket sandwich, announced the soft opening of its brand new headquarters and café in Park City, Utah, with an official grand opening set for February 26, 2015. Adding an extension to Du Monde Gourmet commissary kitchen on North Silver Creek Road, Park City residents can now enjoy South African native Chef Meryl van der Merwe’s global twist on an old-fashioned favorite, right off the heels of its successful debut at the Sundance Film Festival. With all of Chef Meryl’s jaffles being made from scratch daily using only the finest ingredients, Park City is in for a unique and delicious treat.
There’s been some buzz in the air when it comes to new food in town. You’ve probably heard the word mentioned in passing conversation, seen the white bags with the orange swirls and the stand at The Park Silly Market last summer or even, hopefully, had the pleasure of biting into one of these magic little sandwiches. If you don’t know, and you haven’t had one yet, shut your computer, get off your phone and go there. Now. Or better yet, call them. They deliver.
"It was the introduction of a jaffle to Kevin Plank, founder and CEO of Under Armour, and his family that launched Chef Meryl's Jafflz® venture. Having served as a private chef to the Planks for many years, Chef Meryl formed a long-time relationship with the family, who helped to make Jafflz® an extension of her Du Monde Gourmet private chef business. Jafflz® will also open 12 corporate stores, and then will look into franchising nationwide."
"Park City » During the past 20 years, food has taken chef Meryl van der Merwe around the globe from the Mediterranean, where she cooked on exclusive yachts, to Indonesia, where she was a private chef serving heads of state and celebrities... "
"Park City just scored a new fast casual restaurant with the grand opening of Jafflz®, a South African eatery that sells toasted pocket sandwiches made with sweet or savory filling. The cafe is an an extension to Du Monde Gourmet commissary kitchen on North Silver Creek Road, and boasts Chef Meryl van der Merwe at the helm. Head on over and check it out from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm, seven days a week."
(KUTV) Brooke was live from Jafflz® in Park City. The new restaurant was started by Chef Meryl van der Merwe, who has been a private chef for the past two decades. Meryl wanted to bring retro, pocket sandwiches from her homeland of South Africa to Utah. The sandwiches are crustless and made on Jaffle irons. Flavors vary from South African lamb curry to macaroni and cheese. This is the first Jafflz® location, but the brand has plans to expand globally with franchises.
